mission

Our mission is to provide all New Yorkers with easy access to information about the full range of health and human services programs and services provided through New York State.

funding

Unlike 9-1-1, 2-1-1 New York will most likely not be funded by new taxes. Rather, we support the position that initial and ongoing funding for 2-1-1 service in New York State will be through a public-private partnership that includes federal, state and local government funding streams and United Way; corporate and other charitable entities; and major gifts and endowments.

guiding principles
  • 2-1-1 New York will build on existing information and referral (I&R) infrastructure
  • Regional planning will account for distinct regional differences
  • Protocols will be developed with specialized I&R providers to ensure appropriate calls get to content experts
  • Nine regional call centers will be interconnected to provide backup during emergencies
current status
  • Nationally, 2-1-1 currently serves 165 million Americans (67% of the U.S. population) in 38 states; Washington, D.C.; and Puerto Rico. This level of coverage will achieve the benchmark of 75% of the population covered by 2008.
  • In New York State, 2-1-1 services are provided to 3,807,491 people, or 20% of the state's population. 2-1-1 services are available to the Finger Lakes and Hudson Valley regions. In 2007, these numbers will increase with the expected launch of 2-1-1 New York City and 2-1-1 Western New York; 2-1-1 services will be available to an additional 8,143,197 NYC and 1,511,959 Western New York residents, bringing our total to 13,462,647 people, or 70% of New York State residents.
  • Planning for 2-1-1 in the Northeast and Southeast regions is well underway. The balance of the state will follow, based on the experience of the initial pilot regions.
